Yares Art’s 60th Anniversary Exhibition
Published on the occasion of Yares Art’s sixtieth anniversary, this volume excavates the transformative legacy of gallerist Riva Yares. Her prescient advocacy for postwar American abstraction reshaped the cultural topography of the American Southwest. Through extensive documentation of works by fifty canonical modernists—including Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis, Joan Mitchell, and Robert Motherwell—the catalogue demonstrates how Riva’s genius for commercial acumen, force of personality, and discriminating connoisseurship translated into a sophisticated exhibition program that introduced avant-garde abstraction to audiences beyond the established coastal centers. Yares’s curatorial vision, manifested first in her museum-caliber Scottsdale space and later through strategic expansion to Santa Fe and Manhattan, effectively decentered the conventional narrative of American modernism while establishing a vital institutional framework for the appreciation and collecting of abstract art in the Southwest.
