Larry Poons/Frank Stella: As It Was, As It Is

This exhibition catalogue excavates the parallel trajectories and aesthetic dialogues between two artists whose practices have fundamentally shaped the discourse of contemporary painting and sculpture. Both Larry Poons and Frank Stella transcended the dominant paradigms of Abstract Expressionism without losing sight of its ambitious scale and intellectual rigor, and their shared appreciation for velocity and momentum—manifested both in their artistic output and their parallel pursuits in motorsports—undergirds a dynamic exhibition that traces their evolution from the geometric precision of early works to increasingly complex spatial and material investigations. This juxtaposition of twenty-six works, including Stella's star-motif maquettes and Poons's concentrated twenty-four-inch square compositions, offers a penetrating analysis of how these two artists, emerging from the crucible of New York's late-1950s avant-garde, have maintained their position at the forefront of artistic innovation while consistently expanding the parameters of abstract art.
