Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga

This exhibition catalogue accompanied Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga's inaugural New York exhibition. It demonstrates how the artist's monumental tableaux articulate a sophisticated critique of post-colonial Congolese identity through their masterful synthesis of European portraiture conventions and indigenous cultural signifiers. Through careful analysis of nine significant canvases from the artist's “Ghost of the Present” series, the catalogue positions Ilunga's practice within both the emerging discourse of contemporary African painting and broader theoretical frameworks concerning representation, cultural hybridity, and historical memory.
