Hew Locke: Wine Dark Sea
This beautifully crafted exhibition brochure accompanied Hew Locke: The Wine Dark Sea, presented at Edward Tyler Nahem Gallery in Manhattan. Featuring thirty-four recently handmade and customized model ships, the exhibition transformed the gallery into a haunting maritime procession, where vessels adorned with gold chains, barbed wire, and found objects evoked themes of migration, trade, and the entangled histories of empire. Locke’s votive ships—offerings and invocations—hovered midair, inviting reflection on the human journeys that have shaped our world. The publication includes the full text of Locke’s vision, weaving together Homeric references and postcolonial critique alongside stunning photography of the installation.
