DC Three
Gene Davis (1920-1985), Thomas Downing (1928-1985), and Howard Mehring (1931-1978), three icons of the Washington Color School in the 1960s—coined the “DC Three” for this exhibition—synthesized and distilled the pictorial formats and structures pioneered by their Abstract Expressionist counterparts in New York into a pioneering art whose impact was visceral and immediate and continues to inform artists today.
